Are you planning on visiting Jackson, Tennessee? Well, whether you're coming down to sell some animals from your London, Ontario horse jumping barn or just visiting friends and family, there is plenty to do in the city. However there are some special times of year when Jackson hosts annual festivals and events. Depending on your interests, you might want to schedule your visit to coincide with a particular festival. Here are a few of our favorites that often entice out of towners like yourself to visit Jackson.
Sports
If you like baseball, any time from April to September is a great time to visit Jackson, Tennessee. That's when the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx season runs. The Diamond Jaxx are an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, so there are lots of fun extras to tempt you down from your condo in Yorkville. Another popular draw on the Western Tennessee sports scene is March Madness in the NAIA. Every year plays host to a huge women's basketball tournament that draws tourists in from all over the country.
Music
If Blues is your thing, plan your visit to Jackson for the first weekend in June. That's when the annual Shannon Street Blues and Heritage Festival is held. You can listen to some great blues music as well as run a 5k marathon and enjoy some traditional barbecued food. It's the Rockabilly Festival that's the biggest draw for someone from a Canadian trademark firm, though. Every August over 150 bands descend on Jackson to perform during a single weekend. The schedule is ever-revolving, but you're bound to see some names you recognize.
Food and Community
If you want a glimpse at a rural southern life very different from Toronto condo living, head to Jackson in the late summer to partake of the West Tennessee state fair. There's food, games, rides, and exhibits. If it's the food you like, though, late February is your best time to visit. That's when the Taste of Jackson Festival, which offers you a chance to taste food and drinks from all the best Jackson restaurants, is held. Other fun community events include the Skyfest airshow in October, the light display contest in December, and the Miss Tennessee pageant in June.
History
The south, of which Jackson is a part, has a long and proud history. For several events during the year, the people of Jackson invite you to forget that there are such things as power transducers and step back in time. Archeofest in September celebrated Native American culture, heritage, and archeology with real crafts, demonstrations, and dances. And then at the end of September there's a re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of Britton Lane, which happened in 1862.
